Iran Suspends Commitments Under Islamabad Ceasefire MoU, Accuses Washington of Violating All Obligations
BLUFTehran's repudiation of the Islamabad MoU removes the last agreed constraint on US-Iran escalation; resumed formal negotiations within two weeks are very unlikely (low confidence).
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who heads Iran's technical negotiating team, said on Saturday the US had "trampled all of its commitments and suspended them," and that Tehran is "not implementing" its own obligations under the agreement in response 12. The Islamabad MoU, a Pakistan-mediated, 14-point agreement signed in June, provided for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the US naval blockade and a phased de-escalation of hostilities 2. Gharibabadi said there was no new information on possible talks with Washington, adding only that Iran is "busy defending the country," as US strikes entered a seventh consecutive night targeting bridges, tunnels and rail links in Hormozgan province and severing routes to the Strait of Hormuz coast 1. Iran's health ministry reported at least 50 people killed and more than 500 wounded in US strikes since July 6, including a strike on desalination infrastructure in Jask that cut water access for roughly 10,000 people across 20 villages, while the Revolutionary Guards warned countries hosting US forces of a "corresponding response" 2.
AnalysisTehran's formal repudiation of the Islamabad MoU strips away the last diplomatic scaffolding restraining both sides, leaving the naval blockade, Hormuz closure, and nightly strikes on Iranian infrastructure without an agreed off-ramp. Gharibabadi's framing, that Washington already broke every provision, shifts blame for continued fighting onto the United States and signals Tehran expects no near-term resumption of talks. A return to negotiations toward restoring the MoU within two weeks is
very unlikely, given the absence of any US or Iranian conciliatory signal and the accelerating tempo of strikes on transport and port infrastructure. That judgment carries low confidence, reflecting reliance on Iranian state-aligned reporting of Gharibabadi's remarks with no independent confirmation of either side's internal deliberations.
