CISA Cancels Election Day Briefings as Workforce Cuts Gut Election Security Program

BLUFCISA's withdrawal from its Election Day coordination role leaves no federal mechanism to rapidly counter disinformation during elections, a gap that will widen as further workforce cuts take effect.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency canceled the Election Day press briefings it held in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies 1. An agency spokesman confirmed on Monday that no briefings with reporters were scheduled, the New York Times reported 2. Current and former CISA officials told the Times the agency will offer only light assistance to state and local officials 23. FDD reported that CISA's workforce fell from about 3,300 to 2,200 since January 2025, and that the fiscal 2027 request would eliminate roughly 870 more positions 1.

Analysis
CISA has ceded the federal coordination role it held in every general election since 2018, leaving state and local officials to manage Election Day incidents and public messaging mostly alone. Without the briefings, there is no main public channel for rapid, authoritative correction of hoaxes and deepfakes, even as reporting describes Russian covert online operations, AI deepfake campaigns and an attempted Federal Election Commission intrusion. The July 17 edition recorded planned cuts; they have now cost real capability. The gap is structural and will persist into the 2028 cycle unless Congress restores election security advisers. The retreat may instead be a deliberate choice to leave administration to states that distrust federal involvement. Confidence is high because four outlets consistently report the cancellations and reduced posture, though all are secondary and the staffing figures rest on one think-tank account.
