Polish Prosecutors Name Moroccan Suspect in 2024 Border Soldier Murder as Belarus Refuses Extradition
BLUFAlmost no chance exists that Belarus returns Addamrou within twelve months, leaving the killing that anchored Poland's border lethal-force legislation permanently beyond judicial reach.
Polish prosecutors on June 9 publicly identified for the first time Mohamed Addamrou, a Moroccan national, as the suspect charged in July 2025 with murdering Sgt. Mateusz Sitek at the Polish-Belarusian border, and confirmed that an Interpol red notice against him had been approved 1. An extradition request submitted to Minsk in December 2025, together with a European Arrest Warrant, has drawn no response from Belarusian authorities, and prosecutors suspended the case in May 2026 12. RMF FM, citing unnamed sources familiar with the investigation, reported that Addamrou remains in hiding in Belarus and that extradition is considered "highly unlikely" 123. Those sources also told RMF FM that if returned, Addamrou would face interrogation about how he came to be inside Belarusian territory 2.
AnalysisBelarus holds Addamrou and faces no binding legal obligation to Poland, giving Minsk active incentive to retain a witness to its own hybrid migration operations while denying Warsaw the testimony that would expose their mechanics.
Almost no chance exists that Belarus extradites him within the next twelve months. Moderate confidence rests on sustained non-responsiveness since December 2025 and the absence of any extradition framework that could compel action, with the underlying record drawn from a single reporting chain. Addamrou may instead have entered Belarus without state direction, with Minsk's silence reflecting bureaucratic inertia rather than deliberate shielding. Without his testimony either way, border policy and EU sanctions arguments proceed without evidential grounding from the killing that triggered them.
