Russian Forces Deploy Wait-and-Strike Drones to Mine Ukrainian Supply Routes Near Chasiv Yar

BLUFRussia's shift to drone-mining supply routes signals failed assault tactics, not a winning strategy, leaving capture of Chasiv Yar's urban core unlikely before late July 2026.

Kostyantyn Melnykov, press officer for Ukraine's King Danylo 24th Mechanized Brigade, told Suspilne on May 22 that Russian forces are mining supply routes near Chasiv Yar with "wait-and-strike" drones, drone-dropped explosives, and magnetic mines 12. Melnykov said the enemy's stated goal is to "disrupt or completely cut off any logistics" to the sector 12. Ukrainian forces respond by running aerial reconnaissance before supply missions and, when targets are located, engaging stationary drones with FPV systems fired from outside the devices' detection range 12. Melnykov also reported continued Russian infantry assaults on the brigade's positions 12.

Analysis
Russian forces are unlikely to capture the majority of Chasiv Yar's remaining urban core by July 31, 2026. The pivot to remote supply-route mining reflects two years of failed direct assault tactics, not a strategy with demonstrated coercive leverage. Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance and FPV counter-drone procedures have contained the resupply threat, sustaining brigade-level logistics under increased operational cost. Two years of Russian pressure through canal crossings, industrial seizures, and sustained infantry assaults has not compelled a Ukrainian operational withdrawal. Confidence is moderate, resting on consistent brigade-level reporting from a single primary broadcast without independent corroboration of Russian operational scale.
