Hegseth Says US Mission to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Will Be Temporary

Secretary Hegseth told reporters on Tuesday that the US-Iran ceasefire remains in effect, characterizing "Project Freedom" as separate from Operation Epic Fury and saying President Trump will decide whether any Iranian action constitutes a violation. Al Jazeera reported Monday's fighting as the most intense since the April 8 truce: US forces downed seven Iranian small boats, Iran fired on US Navy ships, and Iranian drones and missiles struck UAE targets. Ship tracking data cited by Al Jazeera showed traffic through the strait largely at a standstill more than 24 hours into the operation, despite Hegseth's claim of escorting two US-flagged commercial ships through on Monday. Hegseth said the operation is temporary and that unspecified other countries will eventually assume responsibility; Al Jazeera noted that US allies have thus far declined calls to join the military effort.

Analysis
No allied nation has committed to a relief role, and commercial traffic near standstill more than 24 hours into operations undercuts the administration's claim of restored passage. The shift from de facto IRGC transit coordination to overt naval confrontation narrows the diplomatic margin, while Trump retaining sole authority to define ceasefire violations adds further unpredictability. Ceasefire collapse is unlikely within 30 days, but US forces will likely remain in the Strait through end of August 2026 with no credible handoff mechanism in place. Hegseth's separation of Project Freedom from the ceasefire is better read as a diplomatic off-ramp for Tehran than a genuine operational distinction.
