EU energy commissioner warns of multi-year price shock as Iran war costs Europe 500M euros daily

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen told Euronews on April 22 that Europe faces very difficult months, or possibly even years of elevated energy prices stemming from the Iran conflict, with the daily bill to the continent running approximately 500 million euros. Jorgensen flagged the risk of jet-fuel shortages before the summer tourism season and said EU governments remain very worried about supply. Czech outlet ceskenoviny reported a Median poll finding half of Czech households already feel direct impacts. Brent retouched 100 USD per barrel, per kurzy.cz.

Analysis
Jorgensen's "months or years" framing is the first senior EU official concession that the Iran war's energy shock is structural rather than transitory. At 500 million euros per day, a shock sustained through year-end would exceed the combined fiscal envelopes EU members agreed under the 2022-23 energy-crisis packages. Jet-fuel rationing ahead of summer would add second-order GDP damage in Mediterranean aviation-dependent economies, with Brent's retouch of 100 USD per barrel and euro-dollar sliding under 1.17 making hoarding genuinely urgent within the next 30 days. A coordinated emergency strategic-reserve drawdown before June 15 remains unlikely absent a Hormuz closure, a Russian pipeline or refinery strike, or a sustained Brent spike above roughly 120 USD per barrel. Jorgensen's public language may instead be choreographed to give the Commission political cover for demand-restraint measures it has lacked the standing to push absent a named crisis owner.
