Coordinated Rebel Offensive Hits Multiple Mali Cities as Tuareg and JNIM Forces Capture Anefis While Russian Troops Remain Entrenched
BLUFMali's junta will likely lose its last Kidal-region foothold by early August, forcing a strategic choice between costly reconquest and conceding the north to a rebel coalition now striking near Bamako itself.
Coordinated JNIM-Tuareg FLA rebel attacks struck five Malian locations on Saturday, including Anefis, Aguelhok and Gao in the north, Sevare in the central region, and the Kenieroba prison south of Bamako, the army said 123. The army said it repelled the assaults with Africa Corps support in Konna and Somadougou, called the situation "totally under control," and reported roughly 20 fighters killed in Sevare and six in Gao, against one army fatality in Gao and one pro-government fighter killed there 12. A regional elected official said rebels now hold Anefis, with Russian forces "entrenched in camp there" and a number of Malian soldiers taken prisoner, while FLA spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane said several positions in the town had fallen 12. No fatalities were reported at Kenieroba prison despite vehicle fires, with a prison officer saying attackers outnumbered guards five to one 1. Anefis and Aguelhok are the last army-held positions in the Kidal region since April's rebel capture of Kidal town 12.
AnalysisRebel control of Anefis, if it holds, would strip the army of its last Kidal-region foothold and force Bamako and its Russian-backed Africa Corps to choose between a costly recapture or ceding the north outright. JNIM and the Tuareg FLA will
likely take at least one of the two remaining positions, Anefis or Aguelhok, by August 4, extending losses that began with April's fall of Kidal town. High confidence rests on an independent regional official and the FLA's own spokesman both reporting captured positions inside Anefis, against the army's uncorroborated claim of full repulsion, a claim that may reflect an effort to mask the political cost of losing Anefis rather than an accurate battlefield picture. The prison assault near Bamako shows the rebel coalition's reach now strains Africa Corps' capacity to hold multiple fronts, sharpening the choice Moscow and Bamako face over deepening military commitment.
