Saudi Arabia Cancels Davos in the Desert Conference After Series of Houthi Attacks
BLUFRiyadh's cascade of event cancellations signals that Saudi officials themselves do not expect normal air access soon, and King Khalid International Airport is very unlikely to resume scheduled commercial passenger flights before late November.
The FII Institute announced on Monday that the Future Investment Initiative, scheduled for October 26-29 in Riyadh, will instead be held on dates in 2027 yet to be announced 123. The statement cited delivering the full scale and quality partners expect and did not name the Houthi attacks as the reason, per CNBC and AGBI 24. CNBC reported that a Houthi missile attack on King Khalid International Airport on October 10 killed at least 12 and injured over 300, while AGBI put the death toll at 13 and said the airport has been effectively closed to commercial traffic since 24. The Houthis claimed further strikes on Monday on the airport, Abha airport, Yanbu and Shaybah energy sites 2. The National reported that Intersec Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Retail Forum were also postponed to 2027 3.
AnalysisModerate confidence rests on consistent reporting from several outlets that the airport has been closed since October 10, though the outlets appear partly derivative of one organizer statement, their death tolls differ slightly, and no one has visibility into repair timelines or Houthi targeting intent. King Khalid International Airport is
very unlikely to resume scheduled commercial passenger flights between October 23 and November 21, 2026. The Houthis have publicly committed to keep striking Saudi airports and claimed a repeat attack on Monday, and the postponement of FII, Intersec and the Saudi Retail Forum shows officials do not expect normal air access soon. Riyadh may instead have mainly wanted to protect the event's prestige and avoid a thin or visibly nervous turnout, and the airport could reopen quickly for limited or government-priority traffic once repairs and air defenses are in place. Until then, corporate security teams and event organizers would keep Riyadh travel suspended, executives would rely on overland routes via Bahrain, and deal timelines could slip. A reopening would let airlines, insurers and investors begin restoring routes and schedules.
