Germany Skeptical of Putin's Proposal to Make Gerhard Schröder Peace Mediator

Anonymous government sources cited by Süddeutsche Zeitung called the proposal "another sham" within Russia's hybrid strategy; a German official speaking anonymously to Reuters separately called it "not credible," with both citing Moscow's unchanged war-ending demands and naming ceasefire extension as a first test of seriousness. Opinion within the SPD is divided: former Foreign Affairs Committee chair Michael Roth told Der Tagesspiegel the proposal is "an affront to the U.S. and a transparent maneuver," while member Adis Ahmetovic told Der Spiegel it deserves careful consideration in consultation with European partners.
