Israel Launches Massive West Bank Military Operation Days Before Election

BLUFNetanyahu's pre-election escalation in the West Bank is unlikely to be walked back by November 8, as coalition politics and public commitments lock leaders into an open-ended posture.

Two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others at a checkpoint near Hebron on Friday, and the military said it shot both attackers dead 12. Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered a full West Bank lockdown and a Hebron siege, saying the army was preparing a broad operation in the territory 12. By Saturday, Defense Minister Katz said about 2,000 residents had been evacuated from the gunmen's Hebron neighborhood and barred from returning, while Hebron municipal officials counted 200 to 300 displaced families 3. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported more than 70 arrests across the West Bank, and Al Jazeera reported raids on at least 15 northern towns 34. Israeli rights group B'Tselem called the plans collective punishment that could constitute war crimes, and Israel votes Tuesday 34.

Analysis
Confidence is high, resting on consistent reporting from five outlets, three of them primary, on the evacuations, closures and stated multi-day duration, though the wire-based pieces draw on overlapping agency copy. The operation has already outgrown Friday's Hebron and Halhul cordon: roughly 2,000 residents are barred from returning, arrests span the West Bank, and raids reach northern towns. Netanyahu, Katz and Smotrich have publicly committed to demolitions and open-ended evacuation, and reversing course would cost them credibility with the right-wing electorate voting Tuesday, an incentive that post-election coalition talks will sustain. Israel's military is unlikely to announce the end or formal wind-down of the broad West Bank operation, or lift the Hebron lockdown or siege, by November 8. Any easing would more plausibly come as partial checkpoint reopenings than as a declared end. This may instead be a short, election-timed show of force that Israel quietly scales back after the vote. Humanitarian agencies and Palestinian Authority officials should plan for prolonged displacement and closure in Hebron, and Western governments face pressure for formal responses.
