Chinese and Indonesian Warships Hold Joint Drill East of Taiwan in Geopolitically Sensitive Waters

A Chinese Type 054A frigate, Honghe, conducted a passing exercise with Indonesian Navy frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai-332 on Wednesday roughly 70-80 nautical miles east of Taiwan, involving communications drills, formation maneuvers and underway replenishment, according to China's Eastern Theater Command 12. Indonesia's navy characterized the encounter as a routine, noncombat passing exercise conducted as the frigate transited home from a multinational exercise with Russia's navy in Vladivostok 34. A State Department spokesperson said Washington "urges Beijing to cease its continuous military pressure against Taiwan" and called on other countries not to "amplify Beijing's destabilizing narratives" 34. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council and Ministry of Foreign Affairs separately condemned the exercise as a "dangerous" provocation intended to project Chinese jurisdiction over waters it disputes with Taipei 34.

Analysis
Indonesia's participation, even as a brief passing exercise, hands Beijing a usable precedent for normalizing foreign naval presence inside waters it claims off Taiwan's eastern coast, a corridor Taipei depends on for external resupply in any contingency. Jakarta's insistence on a routine, noncombat framing signals an effort to preserve its balancing posture between Washington and Beijing rather than an endorsement of Chinese jurisdiction. Washington's and Taipei's rapid public pushback indicates both capitals view the precedent itself, not the drill's tactical content, as the operative concern. Repetition with additional partner navies would compound the jurisdictional narrative Beijing is building region by region.
