Scientists 3D Print Cemented Carbide, One of the Hardest Metals on Earth
Researchers solved the long-standing cracking problem in additive manufacturing of cemented carbide by introducing a nickel alloy intermediate layer with precise temperature control. The resulting material achieved hardness above 1400 HV while avoiding defects—a breakthrough for tooling, mining, and defense applications where carbide components were previously limited to subtractive manufacturing.
