Bitwarden CLI Compromised in Checkmarx Supply Chain Attack

A malicious version of Bitwarden CLI (2026.4.0) was briefly distributed through npm on April 22 after attackers exploited a GitHub Action in Bitwarden's CI/CD pipeline as part of the broader Checkmarx supply chain campaign, according to The Hacker News, Socket.dev, and Aikido Security. The compromised package contained a multi-stage credential theft worm in a file called bw1.js that harvested GitHub and npm tokens, SSH keys, environment variables, shell history, and cloud credentials during installation. The worm identified itself as "Shai-Hulud: The Third Coming," linking it to the TeamPCP group that has chained similar attacks against Trivy, Checkmarx, and LiteLLM since March 2026. Bitwarden stated that no end-user vault data was accessed or at risk.

Analysis
TeamPCP's targeting of Bitwarden CLI, a credential management platform with 25 million downloads, marks a material progression from security scanning infrastructure (Trivy, Checkmarx KICS) to tooling with direct access to developer authentication material, compounding the trust inversion at the heart of this campaign. The worm's credential sweep across GitHub tokens, npm tokens, SSH keys, and cloud credentials creates conditions for recursive propagation: each infected build environment becomes a potential insertion point for downstream packages. Corroborated across three specialist outlets, with Socket.dev as primary detection source and Aikido Security's malware teardown as forensic anchor, additional compromised packages are very likely to surface publicly within 30 days, consistent with the documented NPM campaign expansion pattern. The self-referential "Third Coming" designation implies the actor is tracking iterations deliberately, not opportunistically. Bitwarden's containment claim may hold: the operational damage for this version is plausibly bounded to developer CI/CD credentials rather than end-user vault data, meaning headline severity outpaces realized impact if the package was pulled quickly enough.
