China Mandates Real-Time Drone Tracking, 120-Hour Data Retention Effective May 1
China announced two national standards for civil drones effective May 1, requiring real-time remote-identification that transmits location and status from takeoff through landing. Manufacturers must install activation control features; owners must register identity, model, and intended use before any drone can be activated. Drones must store 120 hours of remote-ID data that cannot be deleted by the owner. Beijing imposes additional restrictions prohibiting storage of more than three drones or 10 core components within the sixth ring road. Industry analysts note the continuous operational data streaming into government databases will accelerate Chinese AI and autonomous systems development faster than Western regulatory frameworks permit.
