Iranian national arrested at LAX over alleged $70M drone-and-weapons brokerage to Sudan

Federal agents arrested 44-year-old Shamim Mafi, an Iranian national and US lawful permanent resident since 2016, at Los Angeles International Airport on April 18 night, charging her with brokering $70.6 million in Iranian-manufactured drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition sold to Sudan in violation of US sanctions. First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli announced the arrest. Mafi faces a statutory maximum of 20 years if convicted. The Woodland Hills resident was scheduled for her initial appearance at US District Court in Los Angeles on April 20.

Analysis
Mafi's arrest reflects IRGC-QF and Iranian Ministry of Defense reliance on US-resident facilitators to route drone technology and munitions into African theaters, almost certainly because direct state-shipping channels draw faster sanctions interdiction. Unsealed on the weekend before round-two Islamabad talks, the prosecution telegraphs active Iranian arming of African-theater buyers during negotiations and stiffens US bargaining posture, though Mafi may be a lower-tier broker whose queued case was timed for optics rather than representing a newly developed node. If the $70.6 million figure holds at trial, OFAC designations against co-conspirators almost certainly follow within 90 days.
