Slovak Police Launch Treason Investigation Against PM Fico Over Ukraine Electricity Cutoff
Slovak police opened a formal investigation into Prime Minister Robert Fico on charges including high treason, abuse of power, and violation of official duties following his decision to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. Opposition SaS party leader Branislav Gröhling filed the complaint with over 13,000 co-signatories. The case was transferred from the General Prosecutor's Office to regional prosecutors before reaching police. Fico, widely seen as a Putin ally in European politics, faces charges spanning treason, inhumanity, and mismanagement of state resources.
Analysis
The treason investigation against a sitting NATO ally prime minister over energy policy toward Ukraine is unprecedented in the alliance's history. Combined with the Orban-Russia intelligence scandal in neighboring Hungary, the two investigations represent the sharpest challenge to Russian influence operations in Central Europe since the 2022 invasion.
