Vilnius trial opens for GRU-directed sabotage ring behind 2024 DHL-DPD parcel bomb plot

A Vilnius court on April 17 opened trial proceedings against five defendants accused of working with Russia's GRU military intelligence to prepare and ship self-igniting parcels through DHL and DPD that detonated in Germany, Poland, and Britain in July 2024. Prosecutors allege a Lithuanian national and accomplices sent four parcels containing homemade explosive-incendiary devices from Vilnius; additional group members remain at large. A separate prosecution in Poland of five suspects is ongoing, and international arrest warrants cover another five. Nationals of Spain, Colombia, Cuba, Russia, and Belarus were previously arrested in connection with the 2024 campaign, each facing up to 15 years. The case is a sanctioned European prosecution directly naming GRU direction of sabotage operations inside EU and UK territory.

Analysis
The Vilnius trial, the first NATO-territory prosecution to formally attribute GRU direction of a sabotage campaign, per single-source wire reporting not yet corroborated by primary Lithuanian or Polish filings, shifts the European posture from quiet counter-operations to live legal attribution. With five defendants seated and five more under international warrant, convictions are very likely within the coming months, and a verdict against the defendants would meaningfully raise the political cost for Warsaw and London to continue deferring GRU attribution in their parallel proceedings. The open variable is whether prosecutors introduce direct GRU handler communications in open court; if they do, it would constitute the first public-record corpus of that kind.
