Russia Arming Modified Shahed Drone Warheads With Depleted Uranium, Ukraine SBU Reports

BLUFMounting R-60 missiles on Geran-2 drones reshapes the intercept calculus for Ukrainian air defense, while the depleted uranium finding hands Kyiv a forensic lever that outpaces what a single SBU statement can actually substantiate.

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) reported on May 20 that investigators measured gamma radiation of 12 microsieverts per hour on fragments of an R-60 air-to-air missile recovered near Kamka village, Chernihiv Oblast, after an April 7 drone attack 1234. Laboratory tests confirmed the warhead contained depleted uranium striking elements identified as Uranium-235 and Uranium-238 1234. The R-60 was mounted on a modified Geran-2 drone, which the SBU said Russian forces deploy during mass attacks to target Ukrainian aircraft and helicopters intercepting incoming UAVs 345. SBU investigators secured the warhead, transported it to a radioactive waste storage facility, and opened a war crimes investigation under Article 438 of Ukraine's Criminal Code with procedural supervision by the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor's Office 134.

Analysis
Mounting R-60 air-to-air missiles on Geran-2 drones introduces an active intercept-suppression layer to mass UAV campaigns, a tactical shift Ukrainian air defense has not previously had to account for. The 12-microsievert-per-hour reading, drawn entirely from SBU's Telegram reporting with no independent technical verification, gives Kyiv a forensic anchor for its Article 438 war crimes case. The SBU's institutional interest in documenting Russian violations warrants scrutiny of that framing. The depleted uranium content is as consistent with legacy Soviet-era R-60 construction as with deliberate Russian modification; this record cannot distinguish between them. Ukrainian EOD units and NATO advisors will need to update debris-handling protocols for radiological exposure.
