Japan's Destroyer Chokai Becomes First MSDF Vessel With Tomahawk Strike Capability

Japan's Aegis destroyer Chokai completed modifications in the United States to become the first Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel capable of firing U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a range of approximately 1,600 km putting targets deep inside China or North Korea within reach. The Chokai is the first of eight JMSDF Aegis destroyers scheduled to gain Tomahawk capability. Japan purchased 400 Tomahawks, 200 Block IV and 200 Block V, with deliveries through fiscal year 2027, marking a historic shift in Japan's post-WWII defense posture toward offensive strike capability.

Analysis
The Chokai's completion marks Japan's first offensive strike capability since WWII, a constitutional red line Tokyo has progressively eroded since 2022. With 400 Tomahawks on order and eight destroyers scheduled for modification, Japan is building a credible first-strike deterrent against both China and North Korea. The timing amid the Iran war and North Korean provocations strengthens the domestic political case.
