South Korea NIS Assesses Iran Conflict May Enter Lull by Late April, North Korea Distancing From Tehran

South Korea's NIS briefed the National Assembly Intelligence Committee that the US-Iran conflict could enter a lull by late April depending on the results of intensive US airstrikes over the coming three to four days. The NIS outlined three scenarios: a small deal where Iran reopens Hormuz in exchange for frozen funds, escalation to ground operations and regime change, or prolonged uncertainty. Separately, the NIS assessed that North Korea is deliberately distancing itself from Iran to leave the door open for direct talks with Washington.

Analysis
The NIS finding that Pyongyang is deliberately distancing from Tehran to preserve its own negotiating channel with Washington is a rare window into how secondary adversaries are reading the conflict. North Korea's calculation suggests it sees the Iran war as creating a diplomatic opening rather than requiring solidarity with a fellow sanctioned state.
