FBI Charges California Mayor as Unregistered Chinese Government Agent Running Propaganda Operation

Federal prosecutors in the Central District of California announced May 11 that Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, 58, has been charged with acting as an illegal agent of the PRC and agreed to plead guilty; Wang resigned the following day. According to the DOJ press release, Wang worked with Chinese national Yaoning "Mike" Sun to operate a website called U.S. News Center, which posed as a local news outlet for Chinese Americans while distributing Beijing-supplied propaganda, including content denying human rights abuses in Xinjiang. The DOJ states the conduct ran from late 2020 through the end of 2022, during which Wang received pre-written articles via WeChat from Chinese government officials and posted them without registering as a foreign agent as required by law. Wang faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
