Ukrainian Drones Destroy Two Tu-142 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Iskander System at Taganrog Airbase
Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert Brovdi announced on May 30 that the 1st Unmanned Systems Center destroyed two Tu-142 aircraft and an Iskander launcher at Taganrog's military airfield on the night of May 29-30
The Tu-142MR transmits VLF launch orders to ballistic missile submarines; if either airframe was under overhaul, its loss removes one of Russia's rarest nuclear communications links. Russia fields twelve of the type across two fleets, with overhaul running exclusively through the Beriev plant, now struck twice in seven months. The Ukrainian commander's Telegram is the sole primary, and open-source reporting cannot resolve whether the airframes were mission-capable or inoperative hulks since the late 1990s. Satellite imagery showing repositioning from long-term parking to production areas weeks before the strike adds weight to an active-repair reading; the inoperative-hulk reading would render the strike strategically negligible. The Iskander strike at a deployed marshland position sustains Ukraine's targeting of launchers outside hardened storage.
