Hezbollah Slows Israeli Advance in South Lebanon as War Displaces 1 Million

Israeli ground forces continue to push toward the Litani River in southern Lebanon but face sustained Hezbollah resistance that has slowed the advance. The war has killed over 1,000 people and displaced nearly one million, 20% of Lebanon's population, since Israel's ground invasion began March 16. Israel's Defense Minister Katz stated the intent to maintain control over the entire area up to the Litani River, effectively signaling an extended occupation.

Analysis
The displacement of one million, 20% of Lebanon's population, within two weeks of ground operations is operationally comparable to the 2006 war's full-conflict displacement. Katz's intent to hold territory to the Litani echoes the 1982-2000 occupation zone, which Hezbollah was formed specifically to resist. An extended occupation would tie down Israeli ground forces precisely when the Iran war may require them elsewhere. Casualty and displacement figures come from Lebanon's Health Ministry; Israeli military does not release its own Lebanese casualty estimates.
