Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Article Text, Permits Translation and Grammar Assistance

English Wikipedia editors overwhelmingly approved a new guideline prohibiting use of LLMs for generating or rewriting article content. The policy, supported by 40+ editors, includes two exceptions: LLMs may suggest refinements to an editor own writing (treated like a grammar checker) and may assist with initial translation passes, provided the editor is fluent in both languages. Each language Wikipedia sets independent rules; German Wikipedia has adopted a stricter ban with no exceptions, while Spanish Wikipedia bans article creation but lacks specific carveouts.
