Russia-linked Grinex crypto exchange halts operations, blames hack on Western services

Grinex, the sanctioned Russia-linked cryptoasset exchange that succeeded Garantex, suspended operations Thursday, saying more than 1 billion rubles (~$13.1M) in user funds were stolen in what it called a sophisticated compromise by the special services of unfriendly states. Elliptic assessed the exchange was a principal node for Russian ruble-to-crypto conversion and ransomware-adjacent flows after OFAC and international enforcement dismantled Garantex in 2025. Grinex's suspension leaves a gap in Russia-facing crypto off-ramps. Attribution to any specific service is unverified.

Analysis
The attribution claim, Grinex pointing at Western special services the same week Treasury sanctioned the successor network, is either a play for legal defensibility against Kyrgyz regulators or evidence of genuine hot-wallet loss; given Grinex's structural incentive to project the former regardless of truth, the operationally significant signal is the pipeline disruption itself: per Elliptic's blockchain forensics (Reuters corroborates the shutdown but treats attribution as entirely self-reported), ransomware affiliates and sanctioned oligarch flows are almost certain to rotate to alternative exchanges within weeks, with Elliptic-style clustering likely to map the migration by May. The hack narrative fits a recognizable pattern in which crypto-exchange collapses attributed to state actors are later confirmed as criminal rug-pulls or insider exits, and this may equally be a voluntary shutdown staged ahead of further enforcement action. A replacement exchange is almost certain to emerge within three months.
