Investigation Reveals 519 UK Military Personnel Exposing Locations at Nuclear and Intelligence Sites via Strava

An investigation found 519 UK military officers, contractors, and family members publicly logging Strava exercise routes at Britain's most sensitive facilities including Faslane nuclear submarine base, Northwood central command headquarters, and RAF Fylingdales ballistic missile early warning station. Researchers identified personnel by name, mapped home addresses through linked profiles, and in one case traced an individual to a specific nuclear submarine. A senior Faslane source called the publicly visible data damn good intelligence for the enemy. Intelligence staff at SIS and GCHQ facilities were among those identified.

Analysis
Tracing an individual to a specific nuclear submarine from public fitness data represents a counterintelligence vulnerability that adversary services actively exploit. The root cause, Strava's default-public setting, has been documented since 2018 but remains unfixed, and no allied military has mandated private profiles for personnel with access to sensitive facilities.
