Russia Straps FPV Attack Drones to Geran Wings for Deep Strikes Behind Ukrainian Front Lines

BLUFRussia's wing-mounted FPV drone tactic remains a low-grade psychological tool, not a scalable strike capability, constrained by speed limits and unreliable LTE control links.

Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov, the Ukrainian president's adviser on defense technology, said Russian forces have for over a year been strapping two FPV drones above the wings of conventional Geran, Molniya, and Gerbera drones and releasing them deep behind the front, controlled via ordinary LTE SIM cards rather than an onboard relay 123. He said Russian forces last used the tactic a week ago in Konotop, Sumy Oblast, and cited a jamming-resistance limit: the FPVs cannot be mounted on faster jet-powered Gerans because airflow would tear them off 12. Beskrestnov said effectiveness remains very low, with Russian forces employing the method roughly once every one to two weeks and often losing control links, so drops function mainly as a psychological tactic given the small warheads involved 24. On an FPV drone recorded down in Kyiv Oblast, he initially called a Geran-borne drop one working theory but said three days later he had found no evidence linking it to jet-powered Shaheds 35.

Analysis
Beskrestnov's near-immediate retraction on the Kyiv Oblast incident, three days after floating the Geran-drop theory, indicates Ukrainian technical intelligence on drone-delivered munitions remains fast-moving but prone to premature attribution. Russia has sustained the wing-mounted FPV tactic at roughly weekly-to-biweekly intervals for over a year without scaling frequency, and the jet-powered Geran speed constraint caps near-term platform expansion to the slower propeller-driven variants. Persistent LTE reliance keeps the method vulnerable to Ukrainian network countermeasures, reflecting its psychological rather than kinetic function. Kyiv's air defense planners should treat wing-mounted FPV drops as a low-priority intercept problem relative to jet-powered Shahed proliferation.
