Iranian Missiles Penetrate Israeli Air Defenses Near Dimona Nuclear Site; 180+ Wounded in Natanz Retaliation

Iran launched missiles at the Israeli cities of Dimona and Arad near Israel's nuclear research center in what Tehran framed as retaliation for a US-Israeli strike on the Natanz nuclear enrichment complex earlier the same day. At least 180 people were wounded — 116 in Arad and 64 in Dimona — marking the first time Iranian missiles penetrated Israeli air defenses in the nuclear facility's vicinity. An Israeli military spokesman acknowledged defense systems 'failed to intercept some' missiles, with Iranian cluster munitions proving particularly difficult to stop after payload dispersal. Iran possesses the Middle East's largest missile program, including cruise missiles with ranges up to 2,500 km and medium-range systems like the Shahab-3 and Sejjil. Since the war began February 28, over 4,564 people have been wounded in Israel. The IAEA reported no abnormal radiation levels at either nuclear site.

Analysis
The Natanz enrichment complex was also targeted during the June 2025 twelve-day war. The escalation to nuclear-site targeting on both sides — and the demonstrated failure of Israeli air defenses against Iranian cluster munitions — represents a qualitative shift. Prior INTSUMs reported Israeli defense systems performing effectively; this is the first acknowledged failure.
