Skoda Auto to Exit China by Mid-2026 After Sales Collapse From 300,000 to 15,000

Volkswagen subsidiary Skoda Auto announced withdrawal from the Chinese market by mid-2026, unable to compete with domestic EV manufacturers BYD and Geely. Annual China sales collapsed from over 300,000 units in 2016-18 to just 15,000 in 2025. The Czech automaker will pivot to India and Southeast Asia, where Indian sales surged 96% in 2025 making it Skoda fourth-largest market. Service and after-sales operations will continue per Chinese regulations. The exit underscores the broader retreat of European legacy automakers from a Chinese market now dominated by domestic EV producers.

Analysis
Skoda exit is part of a broader European automaker retreat from China: VW market share has halved since 2019. For the Czech economy, the pivot to India and Southeast Asia creates supply chain dependencies on regions with less mature IP protection, a trade-off PM Babis government has not publicly addressed.
