North Korea and Belarus Sign Friendship Treaty at Pyongyang Summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Belarusian President Lukashenko signed a friendship and cooperation treaty in Pyongyang during Lukashenko's first visit to the DPRK. The two-day summit produced additional agreements covering diplomacy, information, agriculture, education, and public health. Kim condemned Western pressure on Belarus. Both nations have supported Russia's war against Ukraine and have strengthened bilateral ties on that basis, signaling a deepening alignment among Russia's closest partners.

Analysis
The treaty formalizes what had been informal alignment. Lukashenko's first-ever DPRK visit during an active European war suggests Minsk is diversifying its patronage network beyond Moscow. For Kim, Belarus offers a European-adjacent partner that could serve as a conduit for sanctioned goods, the same role North Korea has played for Russia with artillery shells.
