Syrskyi Warns Russia Plans to Raise Jet-Powered Attack Drone Share to 50 Percent Creating New Air Defense Challenge

BLUFRussia's stated ambition to reach a 50-percent jet-drone sortie share is unlikely by end of 2026, but even incremental Geran-4 fielding will degrade Ukrainian intercept rates built around slower Shahed variants.

Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi stated on Facebook on June 4 that Russia plans to raise the jet-powered share of its attack drone strikes to 50 percent, which he said poses new challenges requiring a timely response 1234. He reported Ukrainian interceptors across three air defense echelons downed more than 3,500 Russian UAVs in May and said work is underway to form a fourth echelon covering two additional regions 23. Defense Ministry adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov told the national telethon on June 3 that Russia is preparing to expand use of the Geran-4, a jet drone built around a Chinese Telefly turbojet capable of 400 to 500 km/h and first deployed in combat in May per HUR 5. Beskrestnov said Ukrainian interceptors now down roughly 50 percent of incoming Shahed-type drones, up from approximately 10 percent over the winter, and assessed that once interception surpasses 70 to 80 percent, standard piston-engine Shaheds cease to be operationally viable, underpinning Russia's pivot to jet-powered alternatives 15.

Analysis
The Geran-4's Telefly turbojet, capable of 400 to 500 km/h and first committed to combat in May, outpaces most deployed Ukrainian interceptor variants. Russia's intent to reach 50 percent jet-powered sorties would compound that gap, yet achieving it by December 31, 2026 is unlikely: scaling from first combat deployment to half of all sorties demands Chinese turbojet supply at volumes with no confirmed pipeline. Low confidence attaches to both the intent and the timeline, resting on Ukrainian command sourcing alone with no independent visibility into Russian manufacturing throughput. The benchmark may instead be coercive signaling designed to force expensive anti-jet procurement before the threat actually scales. If the pivot falls short as forecast, the piston-drone-optimized interceptor posture remains correct through at least the first quarter of 2027.
