Russian Susanin Drone Component May Push Ukraine Into Nighttime Blackouts

BLUFKyiv is very unlikely to order nighttime road lighting blackouts by the end of November, as the advisory warning remains conditional on mass Russian use of optical navigation that no source confirms is underway.

Presidential adviser Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram on October 28 that Ukraine may have to revisit nighttime light masking if Russia begins mass use of the "Susanin" optical navigation module on Geran-5 and other drones or missiles at night 123. He said the measure would mainly concern road and highway lighting, and contrasted it with 2022, when Ukraine dimmed lights "out of fear and a lack of understanding" 245. Euromaidan Press noted that Beskrestnov did not say how widely Russia already uses the module 1. Espreso reported that Beskrestnov said on October 22 that Russia struck with a new "Geran-5 K5-K" variant, first recorded a month earlier, with optical navigation and greater range, speed and altitude 5. UNIAN cited the "Polkovnyk GSh" monitoring channel saying the K5 carries a DSMAC-type terrain-matching module like the Kh-101 missile 3.

Analysis
Confidence is moderate, resting on a single conditional statement from an advisory-post holder, repeated across seven secondary outlets with no identified primary reporting, no official directive or draft order, and no confirmed data on how widely Russia fields the Susanin module. His trigger, mass nighttime use, is not reported as met. Ukrainian national or Kyiv authorities are very unlikely to order or announce nighttime road or highway light masking in response to drone optical navigation between November 1 and November 30, 2026. The statement may instead be a public signal meant to prompt debate and local lighting adjustments, or to press Western partners for air-defense and electronic-warfare support, rather than a precursor to a formal order. Kyiv's strike-driven power and water outages also make darker arterial roads costly for emergency crews and evacuation traffic. Should an order come, municipal governments, road operators and highway logistics planners would have to switch to dimmed lighting and adapt night traffic safety. Road-safety agency guidance, regional military administration orders, or Ukrainian reporting of Geran-5 K5 night raids using terrain-matching navigation would signal a shift.
