Russia Deploys Mesh-Networked Attack Drone Swarms With Higher-Resolution Cameras Against Ukraine

BLUFMesh networking among Russian attack drones degrades Ukraine's single-link jamming defenses and, paired with rising launch volumes, will increase the share of drones reaching their targets.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said on September 29 that Russia is networking its long-range attack drones by mesh and fitting them with higher-resolution, more expensive cameras, per Ukrainska Pravda and Censor.net citing his broadcast remarks 12. Ihnat said one drone can act as scout, striker and relay for others, and confirmed mesh use is occurring, calling it "quite dangerous" 13. He reported no information on whether Russia uses ground relay towers, though drones often fly in chains along the Belarus border, and said verification rests with Ukrainian intelligence 14. Ihnat counted 3,177 jet-powered drones launched in September against 2,850 in August, per Euromaidan Press and The New Voice of Ukraine 34. The New Voice reported that Ukrainian air defense downs up to 60% of them 4.

Analysis
Networked Russian long-range drones erode the value of jamming and point defense aimed at single control links, and sharper cameras alongside rising jet-drone volumes point to more precise terminal strikes on urban infrastructure. Ukraine confirms mesh use but offers no evidence of ground relay towers, so the architecture's extent is unverified. Every report traces to one spokesperson's broadcast remarks, with no independent technical confirmation. Ihnat may instead be inferring a mesh from drones flying in chains along shared routes, and the camera upgrade may reflect isolated procurement. If mesh routing complicates interception, air defense, which reportedly downs up to 60% of jet drones, faces a growing share of leakers. Spread across the full strike force cannot be assessed with confidence without technical indicators.
