Iran Says Two Tankers Catch Fire After Hitting Mines in Strait of Hormuz
BLUFAt least one more commercial vessel is likely to be struck in or near the Strait of Hormuz by early November, as Iran's public framing of unauthorized transits provides a ready-made justification for continued targeting.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Saturday that two tankers, each carrying about two million barrels of crude, caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state agency IRNA 1234. IRNA said both vessels had switched off positioning and radar systems and used a route Iran had not authorised, and that the second was left immobilised 12. The IRGC also claimed one tanker was crossing "with US support" 1. Reuters, via BOE Report, said there was no independent confirmation, and the ships' names and cargo origin were not available 12. Al Jazeera reported that Iran's army separately said two tankers burned on Thursday and Friday in the Gulf of Oman, and maritime monitors reported two tankers struck off Saudi Arabia on Friday 1.
AnalysisAt least one more commercial vessel is
likely to be reported struck by a mine or explosive device in or near the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman or Persian Gulf between October 19 and November 1, 2026. Confidence is high, given consistent reporting of an attack surge over two weeks, Iran's declared intent to escalate against the US blockade, and its stated policy of treating ships without active navigation systems as hostile. Sourcing is thinner than the volume suggests: most outlets echo a single IRNA-based wire chain, and Al Jazeera relays Iranian state claims without independent confirmation. Iran may be exaggerating or staging mine strikes to justify its authorisation regime and deter unsanctioned transits, in which case later incidents would stem from Iranian strikes or projectiles rather than mines. Insurers, escort planners and energy traders would extend transit suspensions and raise war-risk premiums, deepening the October 11 flow collapse
