Special Operations Forces Test Mobile Platform for Direct Satellite Imagery Access

SOCOM awarded Austin-based SkyFi an undisclosed R&D contract to develop an ATAK plugin and field-test direct operator access to commercial satellite imagery on handheld devices, the company announced on May 11. The platform aggregates optical, SAR, and hyperspectral imagery from roughly 150 commercial providers, with CEO Luke Fischer telling Breaking Defense the system reduces imagery delivery from days or weeks through existing government channels to minutes or hours. Fischer said direct satellite tasking still requires cloud connectivity, with pre-mission caching designed to address denied-communications environments. SkyFi said Phase I findings will inform potential follow-on activities including expanded integration tasks and additional imagery delivery mechanisms.
