CENTCOM Deploys Knifefish Autonomous Underwater Drones in First Operational Mine-Clearing Mission

CENTCOM announced that autonomous underwater vehicles will join mine clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first operational deployment of the Knifefish UUV in a contested active-mining environment. The General Dynamics-built system detects, classifies, and identifies both buried mines and mines in high-clutter environments. Two guided-missile destroyers, USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and USS Michael Murphy, have begun clearing at least a dozen Iranian mines including the sensor-equipped Maham 3 and seabed-resting Maham 7 types. The UK is preparing to deploy a mothership carrying hundreds of autonomous mine-hunting drones.

Analysis
The Knifefish deployment marks the system's first use in a contested active-mining environment after achieving IOC in 2023. The mine types reported, sensor-equipped Maham 3 and seabed-resting Maham 7, suggest Iran deployed both modern influence mines and bottom mines, complicating clearance. The UK mothership deployment signals allied ISR coordination, but the Strait's depth and current patterns could limit UUV effectiveness. The gap between mine detection capability and clearance capacity remains the critical variable for restoring commercial transit.
