Iran-Backed Houthis Push to Within 80km of Aden in Closest Approach Since 2015
BLUFIt is unlikely that Houthi forces take control of Tur al-Bahah by 17 November, but their rapid seizure of Al-Maqatirah signals that the southern defensive corridor protecting Aden is under serious and growing pressure.
Four military sources told Reuters on Monday that Houthi forces have advanced to within 80 km of Aden, the closest since the early months of the 2015 war 1234. The sources said fighting continued Monday at a military camp at the entrance to Tur al-Bahah district, about 50 km from Lahj and 80 km from Aden 1. They said the Houthis began their assault on Al-Maqatirah three days earlier, took the whole district, and forced government troops back toward Tur al-Bahah 13. Houthi official Hamid Rizq posted video he said showed fighters entering Souq al-Rabouh, which Reuters could not verify; Yemen's information minister did not respond to a request for comment 23. Reuters also reported that Taiz has been encircled since early October, displacing more than 100,000 people 1, and that the Houthis struck Aden airport on Wednesday after warning people to evacuate 2.
AnalysisConfidence is moderate: wire reporting consistently places fighting at the camp guarding Tur al-Bahah's entrance, but every outlet traces to one Reuters report built on four anonymous military sources, and no one has independently confirmed front-line positions. Houthi forces are
unlikely to take control of Tur al-Bahah district, as reported by Reuters or another major wire, between November 3 and November 17. The Houthis took Al-Maqatirah in three days, yet each step inland extends supply lines and exposes columns to coalition air strikes. Since September, when the group held coastal positions near Bab el-Mandeb, the campaign has shifted inland toward Aden. The advance may be a pressure operation aimed at Riyadh and the Aden government within the wider Iran war, with little intent to hold ground, and government-side sources may overstate the threat to secure Saudi support. If the camp falls, coalition planners must shift air and ground reinforcements to Lahj and Aden, and aid agencies would face a fully severed Taiz corridor.
