France Awards MBDA Contract to Develop ASN4G Hypersonic Nuclear Missile for Rafale F5 by 2035

BLUFFrance's bet on hypersonic penetration over stealth locks a nine-year critical path where any schedule slip leaves the aging ASMPA-R as sole airborne nuclear deterrent against improving Russian air defenses.

The DGA notified MBDA on June 2 of the framework agreement and development contract for the ASN4G, France's fourth-generation nuclear air-to-ground missile, with service entry targeted for 2035 12. The system will be carried by the Rafale F5 for the Strategic Air Forces and by the naval Rafale M for the Nuclear Naval Air Force, replacing the upgraded ASMPA-R currently in service 123. France selected a hypersonic speed architecture over a stealth design; Admiral Hervé de Bonnaventure testified to a parliamentary panel that high speed and maneuverability would complicate radar tracking and disrupt anti-missile engagement more effectively than low observability 4. Aviation Week also reported that the missile will field a new TNA4G warhead, though the DGA's public release did not address warhead specifics 3.

Analysis
France's hypersonic-over-stealth choice reflects a threat calculus that Russian IADS have advanced past the point where low observability provides reliable penetration. Secondary outlets add no independent sourcing beyond the DGA's release, and the architecture may reflect MBDA's ramjet expertise and Prométhée investment as much as any settled French assessment that stealth is no longer viable. Parallel development of the TNA4G warhead alongside a new delivery airframe places two technically complex programs on the same critical path, compounding schedule risk. France's concurrent extended-deterrence signaling makes on-schedule ASN4G delivery politically load-bearing in ways prior procurement cycles were not, and the ASMPA-R will carry operational weight against that same threat environment through 2035.
