IEA Issues Code Red Warning, Declares Iran Conflict the Largest Energy Security Threat in History

The International Energy Agency declared the Iran-driven energy crisis more severe than the oil shocks of 1973, 1979, and 2022 combined. Global oil supply fell 10.1 mb/d in March to 97 mb/d, the largest disruption on record. Strait of Hormuz loadings averaged 3.8 mb/d in early April versus over 20 mb/d in February. Oil demand is projected to contract by 80 kb/d this year, with a forecast 1.5 mb/d Q2 decline, the sharpest since COVID-19. IEA chief Fatih Birol warned that prices do not yet reflect the full scale of the supply crisis.

Analysis
The IEA's declaration that this crisis exceeds the 1973, 1979, and 2022 shocks combined is an institutional first in 52 years and signals to member governments that coordinated SPR releases may be insufficient. The 10.1 mb/d supply loss and projected 1.5 mb/d Q2 demand decline indicate the crisis has crossed from price shock into structural market dislocation. Birol's warning that prices do not yet reflect the crisis suggests the IEA expects a second price spike when futures contracts roll forward.
