Ebola Death Toll Rises to 930 as Outbreak Spreads at Record Pace Beyond DRC
BLUFWith over 80 percent of new cases falling outside traced contact networks, Congo's outbreak has almost certainly outpaced national containment capacity and will require sustained international surge through at least late September.
Congo's Ministry of Health said Monday that the Ebola death toll has risen to at least 930, out of 2,344 confirmed cases as of Saturday, with 37 new deaths recorded in the 24 hours from Friday to Saturday 1234. The World Health Organization said last week the outbreak, declared in eastern Congo on May 15, is now the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record and has expanded faster in the past month than any previous outbreak 2. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 80 percent of new cases are being detected outside known contact lists 234. Five provinces have been affected, healthcare workers in Ituri have struck over unpaid wages, at least 12 attacks on health facilities have been recorded, and at least 36 infected health workers have died, while the health ministry reported 724 patients currently in isolation and 22 new recoveries in the latest 24-hour period 34.
AnalysisWHO declared this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in early July, activating emergency financing mechanisms and mandatory cross-border reporting that the advisory-level response preceding it could not compel. The declaration
almost certainly will remain in force through September 20 at minimum, given that caseloads are accelerating rather than plateauing and over 80 percent of new cases fall outside traced contact networks. High confidence follows from WHO's on-the-record characterization of the outbreak as the third-largest and fastest-expanding on record, combined with the absence of any outbreak metric supporting containment. Persistent transmission beyond traced contacts signals that Congo's national response has not regained the initiative, and the healthcare worker strike in Ituri and 12 recorded attacks on health facilities compound the capacity deficit the international declaration was designed to close.
