US Space Force Awards 437 Million Dollar Contracts for First PTS-G Anti-Jam Satellite Production to Viasat and Intelsat

BLUFPTS-G Swarm 1 is unlikely to reach initial operational capability on schedule, leaving the Space Force without a credible AEHF succession path if contested-environment demand accelerates before 2030.

Space Systems Command announced the awards June 10, covering production, launch, and on-orbit checkout for both spacecraft; Viasat's contract additionally includes five years of sustainment services for its dual-band X/Ka-band mini-GEO maneuverable satellite, while Intelsat delivers the second spacecraft 123. Both satellites target 2028 launch in geosynchronous orbit, with Viasat reporting initial operational capability no earlier than 2029 12. The Swarm 1 awards are the first production contracts under the program's $4 billion IDIQ established across five vendors in July 2025; Air and Space Forces Magazine reported budget documents plan four total Swarm 1 satellites, with $237 million in FY26 R&D and $150 million requested in FY27 234. SSC described the system as delivering both Protected Tactical Waveform and non-PTW communications, supporting legacy wideband users while providing anti-jam capability for contested environments 34.

Analysis
On-schedule delivery by year-end is unlikely. Contracts extend to March 2029 while IOC is targeted no earlier than that year, leaving no observable buffer against the launch anomalies and payload integration failures common to first-of-type military programs. Two of four planned Swarm 1 satellites remain uncontracted, further compressing procurement and ground infrastructure timelines against the 2031 FOC target. Moderate confidence rests on Viasat's completed DO1 design phase and ViaSat-3 heritage, which reduce development risk without compensating for absent schedule margin, though sourcing is exclusively official disclosure with no independent technical analysis outside the contract parties. Commercial technology reuse from ViaSat-3 may compress development enough to validate the 2029 IOC; if not, Space Force planners must extend AEHF sustainment budgets and reassess sequencing for the two uncontracted satellites.
