Terrorist-Tuareg Alliance Drives Mali Junta to Weakest Point Since 2020 Coup as JNIM-FLA Coalition Takes Kidal and Kills Defense Minister

BLUFMali's junta faces its gravest threat since the 2020 coup, but the JNIM-FLA coalition is unlikely to seize another regional capital within 60 days given its declining operational scale and limited siege capacity.

The Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and al-Qaida-linked JNIM conducted a coordinated April offensive that drove Malian troops and Russian Africa Corps forces out of Kidal and killed Defense Minister Sadio Camara and family members in an attack near Bamako, according to the Soufan Center's Wassim Nasr 12 and PBS NewsHour, which cited FLA spokesperson Mohamed El Maouloud Ramadan confirming the joint operation 3. In July, the same coalition ambushed an army convoy near Anefis, killing at least 50 soldiers, and in September JNIM separately struck the Douri camp near Mopti, killing more than 50 soldiers and five Africa Corps fighters. The FLA-JNIM merger, not any single battlefield loss, is the structural shift: a Tuareg force with local legitimacy now provides terrain access and cover that JNIM alone lacked, while Africa Corps has been reduced to airlift and armed convoys to sustain Bamako. Camara's death strips the junta of its main Moscow liaison at the moment coordination is most needed. The coalition is unlikely to capture or force withdrawal from a second regional capital within 60 days.
