Netanyahu Orders Cabinet to Begin Direct Negotiations with Lebanon

Israeli PM Netanyahu instructed his cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon on disarming Hezbollah and establishing bilateral peace. The US will reportedly host the talks. A Hezbollah MP rejected any direct engagement with Israel, and a senior Lebanese official told CNN there would be "no negotiations under fire." The offer coincides with the heaviest Israeli bombardment of Lebanon in the war.

Analysis
Netanyahu offering direct talks while conducting the heaviest strikes in the war is a negotiating tactic, not an olive branch. The "no negotiations under fire" response from Beirut is predictable. The real question is whether the US will host talks as reported; doing so would implicitly validate the Israeli position that Lebanon is separate from the Iran ceasefire.
