Australia Appoints First Female Army Commander in 125-Year History

Australia appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, 55, as its first female army chief, effective July. Coyle, the current chief of joint capabilities, enlisted in 1987 and has served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, with expertise in cyber-warfare. She will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart. Women currently comprise 21% of the Australian Defence Forces, with a target of 25% by 2030. Coyle is the first woman to lead any service branch of the Australian military.
