NSA Deploys Anthropic Mythos AI Despite Pentagon Blacklist as Breach Investigation Widens

Anthropic confirmed on April 22 it is investigating unauthorized access to its Mythos Preview AI model, which the company has restricted to approximately 40 organizations due to its offensive cybersecurity capabilities. The breach reportedly originated from a third-party vendor environment, where a small group of users in a private Discord channel exploited contractor access to locate and use the model. The NSA is among the organizations with authorized Mythos access, according to an Axios report from April 19 citing sources, deploying it despite a Pentagon designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk imposed in February after the company declined to make Claude available for mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons development.

Analysis
The vendor-environment breach, per converging accounts, exposes a supply-chain gap in Anthropic's access controls for its most sensitive capability, shifting the policy question from procurement governance to operational security of an already-deployed IC tool. A formal DOD policy directive addressing continued NSA use is unlikely within the next 90 days; DOD's established pattern favors classified memos and ATO-level decisions over public directives, and the court injunction against the supply-chain-risk designation removes much of the bureaucratic urgency. The breach's modest scope may instead allow both sides to treat the incident as a third-party vendor problem rather than a systemic IC failure, deflating pressure for formal action and leaving the NSA-Pentagon rift to resolve through informal channels rather than widening into a declared policy dispute.
