Ukrainian Experts Analyze Russian Geran-4 Wreckage Revealing Chinese Engine and Long-Range Control Systems

Ukrainian technical specialists working with Schemes, the RFE/RL investigative unit, disassembled a recovered Geran-4 drone and identified a Chinese-made TJ-2000 turbojet engine rated for roughly 30 hours of service, enabling speeds of 450–500 km/h at altitudes up to 8 kilometers and a range exceeding 700 kilometers 12. The drone, assembled at Russia's Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan, carried a nose-mounted camera with day, night and infrared channels, 10x optical and 32x digital zoom 1. Specialists also removed a Chinese mesh modem providing up to 300 kilometers of communications range and repeater capability, a 16-channel CRPA antenna to resist electronic warfare, two GSM modems with SIM cards, and Texas Instruments components on the onboard computer 13. Defense News, citing the September 24 Schemes report, noted the airframe carries a warhead of up to 90 kilograms and that earlier Geran-4 variants used Chinese Telefly LX-WP-160 and TF-TJ2000A engines 3.

Analysis
The disassembly confirms Russia's Geran-4 program still depends on Chinese civilian-market hardware, from the TJ-2000 turbojet to the mesh modem and CRPA antenna, despite export controls aimed at Moscow's drone supply chain. The engine's altitude and speed profile pushes the airframe above the effective engagement envelope of many Ukrainian short-range air defenses, complicating interception even as Kyiv's technical teams extract granular targeting data on the components themselves. Continued presence of Texas Instruments parts on the onboard computer indicates Western-origin electronics still reach Russian production lines through third-country channels. Whether this wreckage exploitation will translate into new sanctions enforcement or intercept countermeasures is genuinely uncertain.
