NSA Issues Zero Trust Guidance for Securing National Security Operational Technology Systems
The National Security Agency released a Cybersecurity Information Sheet on October 8 titled "Hardening Department of War (DoW) Critical Operational Technology (OT) Environments with
Defense and industrial base OT owners now face a formal expectation to build continuous verification into legacy control environments never designed for it. The sheet attributes rising urgency to adversary use of advanced AI for reconnaissance and exploit development but cites no specific incident or actor, and ExecutiveGov only restates the NSA release, so the reporting rests on a single originating source. Implementation will be uneven because legacy controllers often cannot support device authentication or encrypted traffic without replacement or network segmentation. Neither sector-specific agencies nor DIB contractors face a deadline or enforcement mechanism for adopting the guidance in assessments and contract language. The sheet may instead be a policy-alignment product restating existing federal zero trust direction, with little new threat reporting and no near-term shift in adversary behavior.
