NRO Awards Three New Commercial Satellite Data Contracts to EarthDaily, ICEYE, and Pixxel

Pete Muend, NRO's commercial programs director, announced at the GEOINT Symposium in Denver on May 4 three new Commercial Solutions Opening awards: EarthDaily Analytics for optical imagery, ICEYE for radio-frequency geolocation, and Pixxel for hyperspectral imaging. Both EarthDaily and Pixxel are new NRO providers; ICEYE has held a SAR contract with the agency since 2022 and received this award for a distinct RF sensing capability. Muend also told the symposium that ICEYE's U.S. subsidiary was elevated from NRO's lowest vendor tier to "industrial standard" cybersecurity status after the company implemented additional protections. EarthDaily launched six satellites on May 3 as part of its optical constellation; Pixxel has had three hyperspectral satellites on orbit since January.

The three awards span distinct phenomenologies (optical, hyperspectral, RF geolocation), enabling cross-modal target characterization rather than expanding any single collection mode. ICEYE's concurrent cybersecurity tier elevation from NRO's lowest vendor level to industrial standard is the sharper disclosure: it reduces the classification barrier blocking commercial data integration into classified workflows and sets the benchmark other foreign-linked vendors will face. Corroborated across three specialist trade outlets without independent NRO documentation, NRO will likely announce at least one additional commercial contract within the next 12 months under the CSO's rolling mechanism. The awards may instead reflect congressional and industry interest in sustaining the commercial space industrial base more than independently assessed operational gaps.
