Russia Hits Kyiv With One of Its Heaviest Ballistic Strikes of the War Using 166 Missiles and Drones

BLUFMoscow's largest ballistic salvo of the war signals a deliberate campaign to exhaust Ukrainian interceptor stocks, raising near-term risk to Kyiv's critical infrastructure.

Russia's overnight barrage on Kyiv early on July 19 combined 41 missiles and 125 drones, including 25 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, 10 Zircon anti-ship missiles, three Onyx missiles, three Kh-59/69 guided missiles and Shahed-type drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force 12. Air defenses shot down or suppressed 126 targets, but 23 missiles and 10 drones struck 20 locations in Kyiv and debris from intercepted weapons fell at 18 more sites, damaging apartment buildings, a shopping center and a supermarket across six districts 12. One person was killed and 15 to 16 were wounded, with nine of the wounded hospitalized and three in serious condition, city authorities said 2. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike used more than 40 missiles and 120 drones and called it one of the largest ballistic attacks on the capital of the war, while acting Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called it the largest use of ballistic missiles against Ukraine since February 2022 1.

Analysis
The mixed use of Zircon and Onyx missiles alongside Iskander-M/S-400s signals Moscow drawing on a broader inventory to saturate interceptor capacity in a single salvo, a deliberate shift from drone-heavy attacks toward combined-arms strikes designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense. Sourcing rests on a single primary account from Ukraine's Air Force, with other outlets reproducing rather than independently corroborating the figures, and Russia's Defense Ministry claim that the strike targeted military-industrial and logistics infrastructure rather than civilian areas could not be independently verified. Continued depletion of Ukrainian interceptor stocks against attacks of this scale will determine how much of Kyiv's housing and critical infrastructure remains exposed to follow-on strikes.
