Crimea Goes Dark After Drone Strikes Hit Key Taman Power Substation
BLUFUkraine's ability to black out all of Crimea by striking a single mainland substation exposes a persistent grid vulnerability that Russian authorities have not mitigated despite years of warning.
Large parts of Crimea lost power overnight on October 24, including Sevastopol, Simferopol, Yalta, Feodosia and Dzhankoi, and OSINT channels Exilenova+ and Crimean Wind linked the outage to a drone strike and fire at the 500/220 kV Taman substation in Krasnodar region 123. The Kuban operational headquarters confirmed "debris" hit the substation and caused a fire, per The Moscow Times 2. Russian-installed leaders Aksyonov and Razvozhayev acknowledged the outage and blamed a drone attack on grids outside Crimea, and Sevastopol halted trolleybuses and cut water pressure in part of the city 12. The Crimean Tatar Resource Center, relayed by Intent Press, reported renewed outages in the morning despite occupation claims of partial restoration around 1:37 a.m., and suspended maritime passenger services 4. NetBlocks data showed Crimean internet traffic dropping to near zero 12.
Analysis
Ukraine can again cut Crimea from the Russian grid by hitting a single node outside the peninsula, and the peninsula now runs on local generation that supplies only rotating outages. All four Kerch Strait energy bridge lines pass through Taman, so repairs there set the pace of restoration. Sevastopol's halted trolleybuses, lower water pressure and a cell network at roughly 40 percent show how fast civilian services degrade. Moscow now blames a grid failure outside Crimea rather than "technological disruptions," but officials avoid naming the substation, which limits outside verification. A protective shutdown or equipment fault after debris from an air-defense intercept may instead have caused the blackout, with the Taman fire as a consequence rather than the target. Confidence is moderate: three outlets and NetBlocks data agree on the outage, but the substation damage traces to one Ukrainian OSINT cluster, a NASA FIRMS thermal reading and a one-line Kuban statement.
